Madison taxpayers can expect two bills this year

DANIELSVILLE - Madison County residents will get two property tax bills this year, officials say.

But the county almost is caught up on its tax digest, Chief Appraiser Robin Baker said, which means this should be the last year for any double billing.

"Best-case scenario, we'll get the bills out in November - about 30 days behind where we need to be," Baker said.

Baker, who took over as chief appraiser earlier this year, and the new Board of Assessors that took office in August have raced to finish the tax digest, which also was due in August, county commission Chairman Anthony Dove said.

Georgia law requires counties to send a digest of their property tax assessments to the state Department of Revenue in time for the office to review the assessments and the county to send out bills to property owners in October.

Once residents receive their bill, they have 45 days to pay it, Dove said.
